Melissa’s journey into real estate began in 2020 after raising and homeschooling her children. With her kids off to college, she was ready for a new challenge. Her twin sister, a real estate agent in San Antonio, encouraged her to get licensed and join the industry.

“I took 2020 to study for my license because, well, we didn’t have much else to do,” Melissa joked. She officially became a real estate agent in November 2020 and quickly established herself as a trusted professional in the field.

With strong family ties to the military—her father and husband both being veterans—Melissa found a calling in helping veterans achieve homeownership. Working with her brother-in-law’s brokerage, she has dedicated herself to ensuring veterans navigate the real estate process smoothly.

Advocating for Veterans in Homeownership

One of Melissa’s specialties is working with VA loans. She highlighted the importance of choosing a real estate agent and lender who truly understand the nuances of VA loans.

“The VA loan process is different from other loans, and you need an agent who knows how to navigate it,” she explained. “It’s frustrating to see veterans get denied just because a lender treats a VA loan like an FHA loan, which is completely different.”

She is particularly passionate about advocating for VA buyers, especially in light of recent industry changes that impacted how VA buyers can compensate their agents.

The Secret to Her Success

Melissa has quickly climbed the ranks in North Texas real estate, ranking among the top 1% of agents in the area. Her success stems from hard work, genuine care for her clients, and an exceptional marketing approach.

“My clients know that I truly care about them. A lot of my business comes from referrals, and that’s because my past clients trust me enough to send their friends and family my way,” she shared.

When it comes to selling homes, Melissa goes above and beyond. She works closely with her son, a professional photographer with a degree from UNT, to provide high-quality listing photos, video tours, drone images, and floor plans—all at no additional cost to her clients.

“My job is to sell the house, and I’m not going to nickel and dime my clients for high-quality marketing,” she said.

Using Technology to Market Homes: MoveTube

One of Melissa’s standout listing tools is MoveTube, a revolutionary platform that features video home tours on Roku and other streaming services.

“When I tell sellers that I can get their home showcased on TV, their eyes light up,” she said. “It’s something most other agents don’t offer, and it helps my listings get seen by more potential buyers.”

Educating First-Time Homebuyers

Melissa has a special place in her heart for first-time homebuyers. As a former educator, she loves teaching her clients about the home buying process and making sure they are informed every step of the way.

“I tell my clients to think of me as their real estate mom,” she laughed. “I won’t let them buy a house I wouldn’t let my own kids buy.”

She walks buyers through what to look for, from structural issues to potential maintenance concerns, ensuring they make informed decisions.

Fun and Memorable Real Estate Moments

One of Melissa’s most humorous real estate moments involved training a new agent—a former Marine. While showing multiple homes, he accidentally walked off with a house key from a showing.

“We had to backtrack to six houses to find out where it came from,” she laughed. “In our office, if you make a silly mistake, you get a rubber chicken until someone else makes a mistake and takes it from you. He earned the chicken that day!”

Outside of Real Estate: Sci-Fi Enthusiast

When Melissa isn’t helping clients buy and sell homes, she’s indulging in her love of science fiction and fantasy books. A huge Brandon Sanderson fan, she also enjoys British detective shows and is a devoted Star Trek: The Next Generation fan.

“I’m a Trekkie through and through,” she admitted. “My Christmas tree even has Star Trek ornaments all over it!”
