A Mission to Get Kids Off the Floor and Into a Bed: Shining a Light on Sleep in Heavenly Peace

 


In North Texas communities like Anna, Melissa, and Celina, approximately 2-3 percent of children don’t have a bed of their own. That means school performance, health, self-esteem, and family dynamics suffer simply because a kid is sleeping on a pile of clothes or the bare floor. Enter Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) TX-Melissa Chapter, a 100 percent volunteer-driven nonprofit whose mission is simple yet profound: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

SHP TX-Melissa: From Garage Start to Local Impact

  • Founded December 2024, Public Access April 2025: In just over two months, the chapter received 130 applications and has already built 40 beds for local children.

  • 350+ Chapters Nationwide: Since 2012, SHP has expanded from a single Idaho garage build to serving four countries and delivering nearly 75,000 beds last year alone.

  • 100 Percent Volunteer-Run: From lumber sawyers to quilt makers, every dollar goes into beds and bedding—95 cents of every dollar funds bed builds, mattresses, pillows, sheets, and delivery.

How It Works: Volunteerism, Donations, and Builds

  1. Family Application & Vetting: Parents apply via SHP’s website; confidentiality ensures comfort.

  2. Bed Builds: Volunteers—ranging from power-tool novices (earning community service hours) to seasoned carpenters—gather lumber, saws, drill presses, and non-toxic stain to craft standard twin or twin-bunk frames.

  3. Complete Bed Kits: Each child receives a handcrafted frame, new mattress (shipped in a box), pillow, sheets, and blanket—ready for use upon delivery.

  4. Deliver & Set Up: Teams load trailers, caravan to addresses, and assemble in home—children often meet their new beds with joyous disbelief.

Cost to Sponsor a Bed Kit: $250 (frame, mattress, bedding, delivery)

Get Involved: Every Role Matters

  • Build Teams: Host a private or public build—lumber, tools, and volunteers provided.

  • Bedding Drives: Donate generic twin-size sheets, pillowcases, blankets, or handmade quilts.

  • Mattress Sponsorship: Partner with local mattress companies or contribute directly.

  • Delivery Crews: Provide truck/trailer and time to set up beds in homes.

  • Administrative Support: Assist with volunteer coordination, grant writing, storage logistics, and outreach to schools, fire/police departments, or social services.
