Rethink Everything You Know About Networking — with Author Lindsey Meyer
We kicked off with a laugh: I botched the title, and Lindsey rolled with it. The real title is Rethink Everything You Know About Networking — a new entry in the Rethink Everything you Know series featuring 28 voices sharing personal practical stories on connection, career, and community.
“You can rethink it, or forget it — either way, it’s about real people, real stories, and relationships that last.” — Lindsey

A legacy built on people first
Lindsey’s fourth-generation real estate roots go back to 1981 on her dad’s side. She grew up watching work ethic + local networking in action — before smartphones and social feeds — and carried that into two decades across title, national business development, and now fintech-enabled growth. In her words, the “secret” hasn’t changed: show up locally, serve generously, and stay curious.
Find your “why,” then pick your niche
Whether you’re brand new or 20 years in, Lindsey’s starting point is the same:
-
Clarify your why (who you serve and why it matters).
-
Define one or two niches you’ll commit to this year.
-
Build a simple cadence (weekly “social Sunday,” monthly mixers, or short Zooms with 4–5 people you want to know better).
Try this this month: host a 25-minute “micro-mixer” on Zoom with 5 people you admire. No pitch. One prompt. One small ask. One generous give.
Old school + new school both work
Lindsey’s take: Door-knocking and coffees still work. So do smart digital habits, especially if you’re speaking to first-time buyers who live on their phones. If you’re camera-shy, start smaller: personal notes, LinkedIn voice DMs, or short text check-ins. Set a routine and grow from there.
Research sidebar: Strong networks correlate with higher pay and more promotions in the broader career literature; the quality and diversity of your ties matters as much as the count.
Education beats intimidation (for consumers)
Lindsey urged buyers and sellers to interview for trust: reviews, referrals, and reputation are your friends. Don’t be shy about asking your Realtor or lender to introduce you to a title pro and other specialists; a quick call now solves hours of confusion later. For example, many first-time buyers don’t know what title insurance actually covers — quick explainer below.
Title insurance, 101:
Owner’s policy protects you from certain pre-purchase title problems or legal claims.
Lender’s policy protects the lender’s interest and is usually required with a mortgage.
A market in motion (what to watch for)
-
First-time buyers’ role is shifting. Despite affordability headwinds, the share of first-time buyers within agency purchase lending has recently been elevated, even as repeat buyers pulled back — an important undercurrent for how we educate and attract new homeowners.
-
Applications ebb and flow. Builder application data this year shows month-to-month movement — a reminder to control what you can: education, preparation, and relationships.
Field Notes from Our Chat
-
Small is big. Lindsey loves intimate formats (4–5-person Zooms; MBA small-group sessions this fall) because the conversations go deeper and the follow-up is easier.
-
Start where you are. Don’t force video if you’re not ready. Pick one comfortable channel and a repeatable rhythm.
-
Community content wins. Coffee-shop spotlights, park openers, local sports calendars — simple, useful, and shareable.
-
Cross-pollinate. I shared how I spotlighted a local boot shop and a fishing guide — zero mortgage talk, 100% community. Lindsey called it exactly what it is: reimagined networking.
Takeaways You Can Use Today
If you’re a homebuyer
-
Interview your team. Ask your lender/Realtor for a warm intro to a title expert and insurance pro before you shop.
-
Prep your network. Tell 5 trusted friends you’re buying; ask for their best lessons and referrals.
If you’re a homeowner/seller
-
Make your listing “human.” Add a one-page neighborhood guide (favorite coffee, parks, dog runs) to your listing packet; it helps buyers picture life in the home.
-
Gather docs early. HOA, surveys, warranties, permits — fewer surprises = faster closings.
If you’re a Realtor
-
Pick one niche for Q4–Q1 (e.g., VA buyers, relocating engineers, short-commute condos).
-
Host one micro-mixer per month (25 minutes, 5 guests, one theme).
-
Adopt a “Social Sunday.” Reply, congratulate, connect on LinkedIn (and yes, it’s okay to open your phone at events to connect on the spot).
