Terri’s journey began in 2010 when she traveled to Kolkata, India, on a medical mission trip. The experience opened her eyes to a world of suffering she had never encountered before. When she returned home, she felt an urgent need to make a difference in her own community.

She started volunteering at a local homeless shelter, offering haircuts and having heartfelt conversations with those in need. This work revealed deeper systemic issues—addiction, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking—all of which led her to launch the Pensacola Dream Center in 2017.

The Work of the Pensacola Dream Center

The Dream Center operates on two core principles:

  1. Serving the Community – The Dream Center distributes outreach cards that say, “When you’re ready, we’ll walk with you.” Their 24/7 crisis phone line provides immediate assistance to those in desperate situations.

  2. Serving the One – When individuals reach out seeking help to escape addiction, trafficking, or homelessness, the Dream Center provides personalized support, walking them through the process of rebuilding their lives.

One of the most significant milestones in this mission was the opening of Canopy of Hope, a safe and temporary shelter for women seeking refuge from dangerous circumstances.

Understanding the Reality of Trafficking & Homelessness

Many people ask, “Why don’t they just get a job?” The reality is far more complex:

  • Trafficking survivors are often trapped mentally, not just physically.

  • Drug addiction is frequently used to control victims.

  • Survivors often lack life skills and trust after years of abuse.

The Dream Center works to restore dignity and self-worth, helping individuals see a future beyond their current struggles.

A Safe Haven: Canopy of Hope

Canopy of Hope is a lifeline for women escaping homelessness, addiction, and trafficking. This facility provides:

  • Private rooms for safety and stability.

  • Counseling and life skills training to promote long-term healing.

  • A community of support that helps women transition into a better life.

Since its opening, over 45 women have found refuge at Canopy of Hope, with many moving on to long-term restoration programs.

Expanding the Mission: Transition Housing & Beyond

One of the biggest challenges survivors face is affordable housing after recovery. To address this, Terri launched transitional housing, renting properties where multiple individuals can share costs and regain stability.

Currently, the Dream Center operates five transition homes, and Terri envisions a future with:

  • More transition houses for men and women.

  • A tiny home community for those struggling with mental health challenges.

  • A dedicated long-term recovery facility.
